Tell them when you're getting overwhelmed: "Can we slow this down a bit?"
Understand that your partner may be frustrated at the delay. Be sure to restart the discussion at the time you specified.
Ask for the time you need: "I do want to talk, but I need to calm down and clear my head first."
Let them know if something they did made you shut down (e.g., raised voice, being too harsh).
Repeat the process of asking for a time-out if you start feeling overwhelmed again.
